When your car is idling rough or doesn't have the pep it used to, you get a tune up, right? Well, just as an engine drives your car, your brain drives your body. Both are critical elements of a larger whole, which if not working properly can wreak havoc on the entire system. Although the diagnostic tools used by the biofeedback practitioner are much more sophisticated than those of the automobile mechanic, the goal is somewhat similar. Optimum performance. Just as an engine needs to be run in certain RPM ranges to maintain the ability for rapid acceleration or long periods of activity, the brain needs to be able to produce waves in the proper range when called upon to perform at peak levels.
Extreme concentration and focus are characterized by Beta wave production and usually accompany high levels of performance, but that's not the whole picture. Gaining control of SMR's (Sensory Motor Rhythms 12 - 15Hz) and Alpha waves (8 - 12Hz) can be just as important depending on your personal goals. Not everyone needs or likes to run at full-throttle, but the ability to effectively access these rhythms as needed is the goal of biofeedback. When your body and mind are "in-tune", you'll be running on all eight cylinders and purring like a cat.
