Brain Maps

Brain maps are a vital tool used in the assessment of neurological functions and without getting too technical, we want you understand how they work. When you look at the charts below you will see several spots of color; mostly green, red, blue or yellow. These patterns represent electrical activity in the brain, with green being the reference color for “normal” activity at any given frequency. When a lot of red or blue shows up, it means that the production of brainwaves in that specific range falls outside the parameters of proper function. Sometimes it’s too much, sometimes too little. Whatever the case, these maps help provide a crucial analysis of what’s going on before any course of action can be recommended. Not only do they provide quantitative information about the amount of activity in a particular area, they also help to locate the source of the imbalance with startling accuracy. For example, notice the top view on these maps and the orientation of the nose and ears. Images like these give us a pinpoint display of what’s going on and where. They also furnish a valuable visual record that can be used to chart progress and adjust treatment as needed.

The two brain maps above reflect patterns of an eleven-year-old developmentally delayed boy. Before coming to us, his verbal abilities were very limited with no spontaneous speech. Along with significant attention problems, his visual perceptual skills suffered. As we continue working with him, he has made noticeable strides in several areas. Better social skills, a rise in spontaneous speech, and dramatic improvements in writing and drawing highlight the considerable gains he has made. His attention and concentration have also realized a boost, and though he has been home schooled so far, his mother is confident and ready for him to enter into a mainstream school setting.
